Dear families,

With the arrival of warmer weather, we are seeing an increase in students riding bicycles, E-Bikes, and electric scooters to and from school and around town. While we encourage healthy and environmentally friendly transportation, it is vital that all riders follow important safety rules to keep themselves and others safe.

The Weston Public School District, in partnership with the Weston Police Department, would like to remind families of the importance of responsible riding. Please take a moment to review the following safety tips with your children:

  • Helmet Requirements

Riders under 16 must wear helmets.

Helmet use is strongly recommended for riders over the age of 16.

  • Obey all traffic laws

Riders must follow the same rules as motorists, including stopping at stop signs, stopping for red lights, riding to the far right of the roadway, and yielding to pedestrians.

  • Reckless Riding

Performing wheelies, weaving through traffic, and impeding the flow of vehicles are dangerous practices that could lead to citations for reckless use of the highway. Unfortunately, there have been numerous incidents of reckless riding reported recently. Reckless riding is extremely dangerous and threatens everyone’s safety.

  • Be visible

Wear bright or reflective clothing and ensure bikes/scooters have working lights and reflectors if riding near dusk or dawn.

  • Stay alert

No texting, phone use, or headphones while riding.

  • Knowing the speed capabilities

Some e-bikes can reach speeds up to 28 mph. Make sure the vehicle is appropriate for your child’s age and skill level.

  • Beware of speed tampering

Methods to bypass speed limiters are easily accessible online, posing a serious safety risk.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Are there local Weston ordinances regulating e-bikes and scooters?

Currently, Weston does not have specific ordinances regarding e-bikes or scooters.

Being a responsible rider not only ensures individual safety but also helps protect fellow students, pedestrians, and motorists. Safety is a shared responsibility.  Let’s work together to promote smart, respectful, and responsible riding.
