Positive Press

Each year Grade 1 students participate in many special events.

100th Day of School
Each class celebrates this milestone, the 100th day of first grade, in various ways.

Earth Day
The children, staff and parent volunteers work together to help beautify our campus by helping to plant flowers around our school building.

Poetry Celebration
April is poetry month.  In the LRC our librarian and library teacher teach each class a poem along with movements.  We then gather together as a first grade community to recite our poems in celebration of poetry month.

Mother's Day Concert
The children present special songs for Mother's Day under the direction of our music teacher.  In addition to the songs, the children recite a poem and demonstrate their ability to read music notes.

Art Show
Our hallways are decorated with student work created during the year under the direction of our art teacher.

Field Day
At the end of the school year, the children, staff and parent volunteers enjoy a fun-filled day participating in various outdoor games and activities.

Grade 1 students also enjoy off-campus field trips and programs that are brought into the school.

Beardsley Zoo Field Trip
In first grade the children learn about structure and function the final science unit in the Spring. Students follow the life cycle of butterflies (beginning with eggs), frogs (beginning as eggs), bess beetles and ants. Students will visit the zoo to see firsthand how various animals’ physical structures help them to protect themselves as well as eat.

Roton Planetarium Field Trip
As part of our science studies about the sun and shadows, the children travel to Roton Middle School in Norwalk to enjoy a presentation at the planetarium.

Talent on Tap
In first grade the children learn about forces and motion during the second science unit in the Winter. Hurlbutt is visited by a scientist from HighTouch HighTech who leads a hands on presentation of how various forces interact in our world. Students get to work with magnets, race cars and more!

Cabaret Theatre
To bring the Tales genre unit in Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop to life, first graders visit the Downtown Cabaret Theater in Bridgeport, CT to see a live production of a classic fairy tale. Past performances have included Jack and the Beanstalk and Sleepin Beauty.
